Telluride offers plenty to fill an entire vacation, but its location in Southwest Colorado also makes it an excellent base for exploring the San Juan Mountains and Four Corners region. Some of the best day trips from Telluride include Ouray, Ridgway, Silverton, Dolores, and Mesa Verde National Park.

Each destination offers something different, from hot springs and historic mountain towns to outdoor recreation and centuries-old archaeological sites. The drive is often part of the experience, with mountain passes and wide-open views along the way.

Ouray

Known for its dramatic setting in the San Juan Mountains, Ouray makes an excellent day trip from Telluride. Visitors can spend a few hours exploring downtown, relaxing in mineral-rich water, or enjoying the mountain scenery surrounding town.

Ouray Hot Springs

The Ouray Hot Springs Pool is one of the community’s signature attractions. The facility uses geothermal water from nearby springs and offers several pools with different temperatures and experiences.

Because hours, pool availability, and maintenance schedules can change, check the official Ouray Hot Springs website before leaving Telluride.

Downtown Ouray

Set aside time to walk through downtown Ouray, where historic architecture reflects the area’s mining heritage. Shops, galleries, restaurants, and mountain views make the compact downtown easy to explore on foot.

Travelers staying in Mountain Village, CO, lodging can combine Ouray with nearby Ridgway for a full day of sightseeing.

Ouray: Rosie’s Favorite, The Western Hotel

Rosie’s favorite stop in Ouray is The Western Hotel, a beautifully restored historic property where visitors can enjoy lunch, dinner, or even an overnight stay. Its inviting atmosphere and mountain-town charm make it a wonderful addition to your Ouray itinerary.

Ridgway

Ridgway provides a quieter change of pace with easy access to outdoor recreation, Western history, and the surrounding San Juan Mountains.

Ridgway State Park

Ridgway State Park covers more than 3,000 acres in the Uncompahgre River Valley. Visitors can explore miles of hiking and biking trails, enjoy a picnic, fish, or spend time around the reservoir. Seasonal activities can include boating, paddleboarding, and swimming.  The park is open year-round, although available activities change with the season.

Historic Downtown Ridgway

Ridgway’s history is closely connected to ranching and the railroad. Founded in 1891, the community became an important stop on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, which connected nearby mining communities.

Downtown retains historic buildings alongside restaurants, shops, and galleries. Film fans may also recognize Ridgway as a filming location for the 1969 Western True Grit.

Silverton

Silverton offers another look at Colorado’s mining history. Reaching town from Telluride involves a longer mountain drive, so leave early and check road conditions before departing.

Once there, visitors can explore the historic downtown and surrounding mountain scenery. The journey also takes you through some of the San Juan Mountains’ most impressive terrain, making Silverton a good option for travelers who enjoy scenic driving as much as the destination.

Ridgway: Rosie’s Favorites, The Maven and Greenwoods

When visiting Ridgway, Rosie recommends The Maven and Greenwoods as two of her favorite local dining spots. Both are great places to take a break from sightseeing and enjoy a meal while exploring this charming Colorado mountain town.

Dolores

Head south from Telluride on CO-145 to reach Dolores. The drive crosses Lizard Head Pass before descending through Rico toward a very different Southwest Colorado landscape.

Dolores is also home to the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument Visitor Center and Museum. Exhibits introduce visitors to Ancestral Pueblo culture, archaeology, and the history of the Four Corners region.  The visitor center is about 17 miles from Mesa Verde National Park, making Dolores a useful stop for travelers exploring the area’s archaeological sites.

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park is one of the most rewarding longer day trips you can make from Telluride. The park protects nearly 5,000 archaeological sites, including hundreds of cliff dwellings associated with Ancestral Pueblo people.

Plan for a full day. Archaeological sites are deep inside the park, and the National Park Service notes that reaching the mesa-top sites from the entrance takes roughly 45 minutes or longer.  Reservations are required to enter most cliff dwellings on ranger-led tours. For the 2026 season, reservations become available 14 days in advance.

Tips for Planning a Day Trip from Telluride

Mountain travel deserves extra planning, even when the distance on a map looks short.

  • Carry water, snacks, sunscreen, and extra layers.
  • Expect limited cell service in some mountain areas.
  • Confirm seasonal attraction schedules in advance.
